Upgrade of a pulsed eddy current instrument

New electronics, firmware and software for a PEC instrument that measures steel wall thickness under insulation and detects corrosion without removing the cladding.

We fitted the existing instrument with a new control board with programmable logic, microcontroller, memory and Bluetooth. The acquisition software computes thickness and corrects for probe lift-off.

In 2019 we built a second version with a new battery module, grid measurements and Excel export.

What we did

  • Control board with FPGA or CPLD, PIC18F66J50 and Bluetooth
  • Microcontroller and programmable logic firmware (VHDL)
  • LabVIEW software: acquisition, thickness calculation and lift-off calibration
  • 75-page operating manual and battery manual
